I do enjoy an anthology. It’s a chance to read new material, visit old shorts, and/or just see what new author has become available. Well this one had a bit of a twist, in that Ann Gimpel has given further glimpses into her workings as an author on various levels of the paranormal. This collection allowed for me to get a scare, a tingle, some goosebumps, a bit of romance, and even some encounters of the otherworldly kind, both alien and supernatural. Ann Gimpel is a USA Today bestselling author. A lifelong aficionado of the unusual, she began writing speculative fiction a few years ago. Since then her short fiction has appeared in a number of webzines and anthologies. Her longer books run the gamut from urban fantasy to paranormal romance. Once upon a time, she nurtured clients. Now she nurtures dark, gritty fantasy stories that push hard against reality. When she’s not writing, she’s in the backcountry getting down and dirty with her camera. She’s published over 45 books to date, with several more planned for 2017 and beyond. A husband, grown children, grandchildren, and wolf hybrids round out her family.

Thank so much for inviting me back to guest post on your blog! It’s a pleasure to be here. I’ve been thinking about all the bits and pieces that make up being an Indie author here of late, so that’s what I’m going to write about today.

During the years I wrote for various publishers, I mostly wrote and edited. I did some marketing. Probably would’ve done more, but like everything else in this crazy business, enhancing my discoverability as an author has been a journey as opposed to an event I can put my finger on.

Outside of reworking all the books I got my rights back to and writing new ones to build up various series, I’ve made a real push to teach myself how to market better these last few months. Toward that end, I’ve built up my newsletter, and I’m still fine-tuning FB ads. One of the very cool plusses about my growing newsletter has been one on one contact with readers. I encourage them to email me, and I’ve made bunches of new friends. Friends who also happen to enjoy my books.

During April and May, we took our motorhome on a cross-country jaunt. One of the lovely, but totally unintended, consequences was I ended up in many parts of the U.S. where some of my readers live. I think they got a kick out of sharing their little piece of the country with me. And I got lots of grist for the mill for my books.

I tend to be visual, so if I’ve seen something, I can write about it.

Back before I wrote longer pieces, I wrote short stories. Before the holidays, I thought it might be fun to put some of those short stories into a collection, so I selected a few. Some turned out to be the beginnings of longer works, and others started and ended their lives as short stories. In all, I picked nine. Because many of my earlier works had a horror slant, I picked the creepier tales and Edge of Night was born. It’s gotten decent reviews and as I’d hoped, it’s encouraged sell through to some of my other books. From the perspective of a marketing experiment, it’s worked well.
